SUZUKI INTRUDER 1500 LC

Kuralt for the Wild West (Nevada and California) was a Suzuki Intruder 1500LC, perhaps the most powerful warhorse I'd ridden. When I had to force my way through the snow while crossing the Donner Pass, the Intruder plowed through it like a Zamboni. Power was only part of the attraction. For a short-legged rider, the low and extra wide saddle was perfect for marathon rides like these. With the wide wind screen (optional), I was able to ride for hundreds and hundreds of miles without feeling fatigued. Another plus were the well-positioned handlebars and backseat which unexpectedly provided lower back support. No strain, no pain. One drawback, however, was the lack of a fuel gauge. A low fuel light lit up when I was approaching reserve which didn't comfort me on an already nerve-wracking ride across Death Valley. Also the stingy 4.1 gallon fuel tank (awkwardly accessed beneath a flap near the seat) was blocked by a metallic 'T' that made difficult to trigger the emission-controlled gas pumps in California. Other than that, the style, ergonomics and power made it an especially good bike for the long, butt-numbing, haul.
